&= nbsp; Sir Francis Drake, a Devon man already with a growing reputation as a bold and dreaded privateer throughout the Spanish Empire, set sail in 1577 on his voyage around the world. His ship, original= ly the 'Pelican' was later renamed the 'Golden Hinde'. In it Drake successfully circumnavigated the globe - the first Englishman t= o do so, returning to Plymouth in September 1580 laden down with Spanish treasure. In due course he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I in Deptford on the deck of the 'Golden Hinde'. Todays 'Golden Hinde' seen here in Padstow harbour, is a full size replica of Drake's 16th. cent= ury warship; Launched in 1973, the authentic hand-crafted galleon has also circumnavigated the world, featured in films and sailed over 100,000 miles - many more than the original.
